Well, dressed in that spiffy suit, he's obviously meant to be a southern gentleman commentator on literature, a man of letters in the modern world! He looks to me like Cleanth Brooks's or Red Warren's research assistant, someone who can be called upon in a moment's notice to pour some tea, converse with some southern lady, or discourse upon important topics. His great-grandmother (and all the rest of us) would be proud!
